Enter Sandman is the first song and lead single off of the Black Album. The single achieved platinum certification for more than 1,000,000 copies shipped in the United States, spurring sales of over 30 million copies for Metallica and propelling Metallica to worldwide popularity. The song was written by Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield, and Lars Ulrich.
Originally, the idea of the song is about "a dysfunctional family" (or as Lars Ulrich puts it, "about crib death")[1]
This song is also a playable track in Rock Band and Guitar Hero: Metallica.
This song was played when New York Yankees pitcher, Mariano Rivera would take the mound, as they would say this meant it was lights out. When Metallica played in Yankee Stadium, on September 14th, 2011, they made sure to play "Enter Sandman." They commented about how they had to play it being in Yankee Stadium and that they didn't want to be in the stadium of the losing team-Mets Stadium.
On June 13th, 2024, this song was released in Fortnite as a jam track and playable song in Fortnite Festival.
